Arthur Sharlpes was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, on 28 September 1905, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 27 January 1926. Advanced Acting Leading Stoker on 1 October 1939, he joined H.M.S. Erebus on 10 July 1940, and served in her until 2 February 1944. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26 June 1941, and was promoted Temporary Stoker Petty Officer on 21 November 1943. He was discharged ‘physically unfit for Naval service’ on 28 June 1946.
