Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (Owen Hickey.) edge nicks and minor edge bruise, polished, good very fine £500-£700

Owen Hickey was born on board H.M.S. Tonnant at Cove, co. Cork, in 1815, the son of Private Owen Hickey, Royal Marines (who was also awarded the Naval General Service Medal with clasp Endymion wh President), and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in H.M.S. Windsor Castle on 11 May 1827, aged 11. He joined H.M.S. Hecate from H.M.S. Excellent in the rate of Gunner’s Mate on 27 October 1840, and served in her during the operations on and off the coast of Syria in 1840. .

Hickey was promoted to Warrant rank as Acting Gunner in H.M.S.
Racer on 20 September 1846, and was ultimately advanced to Gunner 1st Class on 3 October 1857. He served in H.M.S. Odin during the Baltic campaign (entitled to Baltic Medal), and finally retired on 18 July 1870. He was subsequently a pensioner of Greenwich Hospital, and died in East Stonehouse, Devonshire, in 1885.
