Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (J. B. Smith. C.P.O., H.M.S. Seagull.) impressed naming, extremely fine £70-£90

Joseph Benjamin Smith was born at Harwich, Essex, on 2 June 1862 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 30 October 1877. Advanced to Acting Chief Petty Officer on 10 May 1898, he was confirmed in this rate on 10 May 1899, and joined the torpedo gunboat H.M.S. Seagull on 29 August of that year. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 25 January 1900, was advanced to Acting Gunner Instructor on 9 February, and retired to pension on 3 June 1900, after exactly 20 years ‘man’s time’ service.
