Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Albert Risby, C.P.O., H.M.S. Pioneer.) impressed naming, extremely fine £70-£90

Albert Risby was born in Gillingham, Kent, on 1 May 1869, and was educated at the Greenwich Hospital School. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 2 October 1884, and was advanced Ordinary Seaman on 1 May 1887; Able Seaman on 1 December 1888; Leading Seaman on 19 February 1893; Petty Officer 2nd Class on 1 July 1894; Petty Officer 1st Class 26 February 1895; and Chief Petty Officer on 10 November 1899. He joined the 3rd Class Cruiser H.M.S. Pioneer on 15 November 1900, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 4 July 1902. He was shore pensioned on 7 May 1907, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Chatham the following day. Recalled for service during the Great War, he served in the depot ships H.M.S. Europa and St. George in the Aegean at Mudros and Salonika, prior to being demobilised on 21 August 1919.

Sold with copied research.

Note: Owing to changes in the qualification period for the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, it was recorded on Rigby’s service papers that he was eligible for the medal on 31 December 1900, which probably explains why he has a Victorian rather than an Edwardian medal.
