Daniel Dempsey was born in Blaydon, co. Durham, in 1873, and attested in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 3 June 1896. He served with the 1st Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, before purchasing his discharge on 18 September 1902. Following the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted in his old Regiment on 19 October 1914, and served with the 3rd Battalion in Egypt from 1916. He died on active service at 19th General Hospital, Alexandria, on 23 April 1916, and is buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Cemetery, Egypt. He is additionally commemorated on the Cromer War Memorial, Norfolk.
