Reginald William Cook was born in Portsmouth on 7 March 1902, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Artificer on 27 July 1917. He served during the Great War under training at H.M.S. Fisgard, and was entitled to the British War Medal only. After service in a variety of ships, he joined the surveying ship H.M.S. Flinders on 7 October 1933, and was advanced Engine Room Artificer 1st Class on 1 January 1935. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 14 March 1935, and served during the Second World War in the surveying ship H.M.S. Challenger, serving in Home Waters and off West Africa, and in H.M.S. Nelson. He was released from the Navy on 21 November 1945.
