Ronald McDonald was born in Glengarry, Ontario, on 21 June 1891, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at North Bay, Ontario, on 6 June 1916, having previously served with the 97th Militia Regiment. Posted initially to the 159th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, he arrived in England on 11 November 1916, before transferring to the Railway Construction Company on 7 February 1917. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 4th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops from 24 February 1917, and was promoted Sergeant on 7 January 1918. Returning to Canada on 6 March 1919, he was discharged at Montreal on 26 March of that year, and died at Apple Hill, Ontario, on 26 November 1966.
