M.I.D. London Gazette 7 July 1942: ‘For gallant service in successful patrols while serving in H.M. Submarine Torbay:- Stoker 1st Class Norman Alex Rowe, D/K. 66094.’

The recommendation for an Immediate M.I.D. states:

‘For his good services in H.M.S. Torbay during 10 war patrols since commissioning 17 months ago in November 1940, throughout which he has been the ammunition supply number in 20 successful gun actions and has carried out this important duty with the speed and efficiency that is vital in submarine surface operations.

In addition he has performed the duties of messman to the Engine Room Artificers in such a notable manner that, at their request, he has been left to do this duty unchanged for over a year.’

The captain of
Torbay, Commander A. C. C. Miers, D.S.O., R.N., was awarded the Victoria Cross in this same gazette.

Sold with original M.I.D. Certificate (Stoker 1st Class Norman Alex Rowe, H.M.S. Torbay, 7 July 1942) and a brass outline model of
Torbay mounted on a plaque, together with comprehensive research.
