Queen’s South Africa and Defence of Kimberley Star ex B.D.W. 12 May 1993.

Thomas Lombard Angel was born on 10 January 1867, the son of John Angel of Torquay, Devon. He was educated at St. Luke’s, Torquay and became a mechanical engineer. Moving to South Africa, he served with the Kimberley Regiment in the Bechuanaland campaign 1896-97, being one of the officers who crushed the Pokwani rebellion. He again saw service during the Boer War, serving as a Captain in the Kimberley Cycle Corps during the siege of Kimberley. For his services he was mentioned in despatches and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [
London Gazette 19 April 1901]: ‘Thomas Lombard Angel, Captain, Kimberley Town Guard. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa.’

He also received the added honour of having a street in Kimberley named after him. Again during the Great War, he served as a Captain in the Imperial Army and was later invalided home and became Assistant to the Colonel in charge of records at Lichfield (1915) and then Hounslow.
