Three: Stoker Petty Officer A. Jones, Royal Navy

1914-15 Star (296102 Act. L. Sto., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (296102 S.P.O., R.N.) generally very fine (3) £30-40

Arthur Jones was born in Llanelly, Glamorganshire in December 1881 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in October 1900. Having gained advancement to Stoker in September of the following year, but not seen any active service, Jones, unusually, purchased his release for £6 and was embodied in the Royal Fleet Reserve. In February 1910, however, he re-enrolled in the Royal Navy and was serving in the cruiser H.M.S. Europa on the outbreak of hostilities. Thus employed until early 1916, when he removed to the Malta depot ship Egmont, Jones again secured an early discharge, in July 1917, for the purpose of joining the London Fire Brigade.
