Four: Serjeant J. Appleby, M.M., Durham Light Infantry

Joseph Appleby served with the 9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in the Great War, landing in France on 20 April 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery at the battle of Cojeul River, 23 - 28 April 1917 (London Gazette 18 July 1917). A report of this action was written by the commanding officer - R. B. Bradford V.C., M.C.; in the War Diary Appleby’s name is listed as a recipient of the M.M., one of 22 to be awarded to the D.L.I. for the battle. He was awarded the Territorial Efficiency Medal in 1920 and the Efficiency Medal (Territorial) in 1937. This latter, like the Military Medal, are now sadly separated from the above group. Sold with a copy of Bradford’s report, war diary entries and other copied papers.
