M.M. London Gazette 14 January 1918 (Liverpool). The following official recommendation is held in the 55th Divisional records, Liverpool Library: ‘For gallantry in action during the attack on Hill 35 east of Ypres on 20 September 1917. During the attack he displayed conspicuous gallantry in hand to hand fighting. He worked very well in the digging of a strong point, assisted the wounded and helped to bury the dead. A splendid all round fighter.’
