M.C. London Gazette 26 September 1917 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a daylight raid on the enemy trenches. When prevented by strong opposition from reaching his objective, he personally shot two of the enemy, and then gradually withdrew his men and disposed of them, with great coolness and skill, in various shell holes, under a heavy hostile barrage. He was badly wounded in the arm during the raid.’

Harris Young Johnson was born on 26 November 1894 at Fairfield, Liverpool and lived in Bootle, Liverpool. He went to France with the original contingent of the 1/5th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment on 24 February 1915, being attached to 184 Field Company, Royal Engineers on 6 August 1915, for sapping duties. He returned to the 1/5th Battalion on 3 September 1915, before receiving his commission into the 3/5th Battalion on 24 January 1916. Second Lieutenant Johnson received a severe gun shot wound to the right arm at Ypres on 24 June 1917, a wound that neccessitated his discharge from the army on 1 January 1919. He died on 10 July 1970. Sold with copy m.i.c. and 13 pages from his correspondence file.
