John Cecil Bawtree Hawkins was born in 1891 and was commissioned into the R.G.A. in 1911. He was promoted Lieutenant in December 1914, Temporary Captain December 1915 and Captain in August 1916. Hawkins served in France and Belgium, 5 March 1915 to 14 September 1916 and was afterwards Officer commanding the Gentlemen Cadets at the Royal Military Academy. In 1927 he was an Instructor at the school of Artillery, India. He attained the rank of Major in October 1929.
