David Purcell was born in 1859 at Hulme, Manchester. He enlisted with the 19th Hussars in 1875, serving as a Trumpeter 1878-1883 and later as a Bandsman 1873-1885. With the regiment, he served in Egypt 1882-1886 and India 1891-1893. Appointed Sergeant Trumpeter in 1891 and Sergeant in 1893, he was transferred as a Sergeant to the Berkshire Regiment in 1897 and appointed Sergeant Drummer the same year. He was discharged in 1898. Sold with copied service papers; clasps confirmed.
