John Marshall was born in Eastbourne, Sussex and enlisted into the Essex Regiment in 1886, aged 18 years 11 months. With the regiment he served in Cyprus, 1890-92, India, 1892-1900 and South Africa, 1900-02. In the latter he was mentioned in Lord Robert’s despatches of 4 September 1901. He was discharged in 1907. Marshall re-enlisted in September 1914 and quickly attained the rank of C.S.M., serving initially with the Essex Regiment and later the Labour Corps. Discharged in 1919, he died in 1945. Sold with 21 sheets of copied service papers.
