Reginald Walter Burnley Belt was born at Albuhera Barracks, Aldershot, on 21 October 1897, son of Colour-Sergeant John Belt, South Staffordshire Regiment. He was educated at Woolwich Polytechnic, and, before joining up in the Great War, entered the Imperial Customs Service in 1915. He was on military service 1916-19, and served in France with the Royal Irish Rifles, having been appointed a temporary 2nd Lieutenant on 31 October 1917.
Belt was subsequently in Palestine, where he was appointed Relieving Collector of Customs in December 1933, being stationed at Jerusalem. He was later Deputy Director of Customs at Haifa, and then Assistant Director. In April 1938 he was appointed Director of Customs, Excise and Trade, in Palestine, and was also appointed to the Advisory Council. He was a member of the Palestine Trade Delegation to Egypt in 1935, and to Lebanon-Syria in 1939. In 1951, Belt left Palestine and became Comptroller of Customs, on a three years’ agreement, in Barbados. Whilst there he was also awarded the 1953 Coronation medal. Sold with full research.
