Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), Penny, Small Flan type, Langport, Godric, eodrie on l·a:n, 0.83g/9h (Freeman p.418; N 818; S 1175). Very fine or better, excessively rare £600-£800

Provenance: P.W.P. Carlyon-Britton Collection, Part III, Sotheby Auction, 11-13 November 1918, lot 1112 (part), where ascribed to Launceston; R.C. Lockett Collection, Part IV, Glendining Auction, 26-7 April 1960, lot 3794; Glendining Auction, 21-2 September 1977, lot 548; bt Seaby.

Freeman casts some doubt on the attribution of this type to Langport which is surprising since Godric strikes coins in nearby Bruton in the earlier PACX and Radiate types, in Ilchester for the later Helmet, Sovereign and Hammer Cross types, and in Shaftesbury for Facing Bust and Pyramids types
