Allan F. Redfern was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Devonshire Regiment in 1900 becoming Lieutenant in 1903. After service in the Boer War he transferred to the Indian Army, serving with the 7th and later the 8th Gurkha Rifles. Served in the Great War with the Royal Army Service Corps and retired with the rank of Major.
