R.S.P.C.A. Life Saving Medal, silver (Insp. H. Fletcher, 1940), complete with ‘Humanity’ brooch bar, extremely fine £80-100

Hayden James Jepherson Fletcher was born at St. Pancras, London in 1884. He was employed as a grocer’s assistant, 1898-1901 and postman, 1901-05, before serving in the Royal Engineers during the years 1905-08. He then served with the Margate Borough Police, 1908-10 before entering employment with the R.S.P.C.A. as a Probationer Inspector. In 1914, he returned to the Army, serving with the Royal Engineers, entering the French theatre of war on 14.8.1914. In 1920 he rejoined the R.S.P.C.A. During the Second World War, as an Inspector at Bexleyheath during 1940, he was awarded the Society’s Silver Medal ‘in recognition of [his] courage and humanity in rescuing animals from areas rendered dangerous by delayed-action bombs.’ Fletcher attained the rank of Chief Inspector in 1947 and retired in 1949.
