Four: Effendi Fergalla, East African Rifles, late King’s African Rifles

East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Witu August 1893 (Ferjalla Effendi, 3rd Battn. K.A. Rifles), locally impressed naming in large capitals; East and Central Africa 1897-99, 1 clasp, 1898 (Farjalla); Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, Jubaland (Effendi Fergalla, E. Afr. Rif.); Sultan of Zanzibar’s Medal 1896 (Ferjalla Effendi, 3rd Battn. K.A. Rifles), locally impressed naming in large capitals, the first officially corrected and with collector’s numbers impressed by suspension claw, the second with erased details before and after name, contact marks, very fine and better, rare (4) £600-800

It is interesting to speculate whether Private Fergalla was one of the 20 Zanzibaris commanded by Captain G. P. Hatch, Wiltshire Regiment (afterwards 3rd King’s African Rifles), all of whom accompanied the Naval Brigade drawn from H.M.S. Swallow and the gunboat Sparrow. Or, too, one of the Zanzibaris who accompanied the Lamu Forest Expedition, but unfortunately only a roll of naval personnel survives for the Witu operations of August 1893.

He does not appear to be on the East and Central Africa ‘1898’ roll, although the remaining name of ‘Farjalla’ on the Medal is absolutely as engraved at the time, in the usual sloping capitals.

He is verified as having been awarded the Africa General Service Medal for ‘Jubaland’ for services in the East African Rifles.
