Lord Hardinge’s Preservation 1913, Hyderabad, gold medal, 31.5mm, 26.5 gms including ribbon, obv: Viceregal Arms of Lord Hardinge; rev: around border ‘H.H. The Nizam’s Dominions . Hyderabad Deccan’, in centre ‘June 20th 1913 In commemoration of their Excellencies Lord & Lady Harginge’s merciful preservation at Delhi on 23rd Decr. 1912’, edge milled, fitted with gold claw and ring suspension and engraved gold ribbon suspension brooch, extremely fine and extremely rare £400-500

Struck to commemorate Hardinge’s survival from assassination on 23rd December 1912, when a bomb containing gramaphone needles and nails was thrown into the howdah of his State elephant as he entered Delhi. Hardinge was severely wounded, one of his attendants killed and another wounded.
