The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, G.C.M.G., Knight Grand Cross set of insignia, comprising silver-gilt collar chain formed of 26 alternating links of crowned lions of England, Maltese crosses in white enamel, cyphers ‘SM’ and ‘SG’, and two pairs of winged lions each bearing a book and seven arrows, one pair surmounted by Royal crown and swivel-ring suspension, one white enamel panel of one Maltese cross lacking; sash badge, 85mm x 125mm, silver-gilt, gold and enamels, some enamel chips to both centres; and breast star, 85mm, silver, silver-gilt, gold and enamels, complete with full dress sash, generally good very fine £2000-2500

Created G.C.M.G. on 2 January 1905 when Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to His Majesty the Emperor of Russia, in recognition of his services in Russia during the Russo-Japanese war and the crisis of the ‘Dogger Bank’ incident. Hardinge had been made a K.C.M.G. on 26 March 1904, upon his appointment as Ambassador to the Emperor of Russia. Sold with copies of the warrants for both appointments.
