The original Recommendation states: ‘Sapper Marshall was in command of five sappers and one “White” Armoured Scout Car. Under heavy shellfire he showed great coolness and presence of mind clearing and locating enemy minefields. Later, when his section had three casualties he got a doctor and successfully evacuated them and continued the work of clearing mines. At all times he showed great personal courage and powers of leadership.’

Thomas Lerken Marshall served with the Royal Engineers during the Second World War, and was awarded an Immediate M.M. in respect of the above cited deeds whilst serving in 6 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers, 24th Armoured Brigade, 10th Armoured Division, during the first five days of the Second Battle of El-Alamein.
