Ernest Cundell was born in Cottenham, Cambridgeshire, on 12 May 1872, and joined the Royal Marines on 12 April 1890, before transferring to the Royal Navy as a Qualified Signaller on 1 October 1895. Advanced Chief Petty Officer on 6 November 1912, he was shore pensioned on 23 October 1913, but was recalled to the service following the outbreak of the Great War in the rate of Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist. He was finally demobilised on 27 February 1919.

Thomas Richard Pendrick was born in Teignmouth, Devon, on 13 June 1875 and joined the Royal Navy as a Cook’s Mate on 21 April 1895. He was advanced Chief Ship’s Cook on 1 November 1907, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 26 April 1910. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Carnarvon from the outbreak of War to 3 November 1917, and then in various shore based establishments, and was promoted Chief Petty Officer Cook on 17 May 1919. He was shore pensioned on 9 October 1919.
