Sydney Harcourt Johnson was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon, on 8 April 1896, and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry as a Boy Bugler on 11 August 1910. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Cornwallis, and was aboard her when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-32 on 9 January 1917. Advanced Sergeant on 28 September 1923, he was discharged on 7 April 1935, but was recalled to the service on 31 July 1939, and served throughout the Second World War. He was finally discharged on 19 September 1945, after 30 years and 291 days’ service.
