D.S.M. London Gazette 14 June 1945:

‘For gallantry or outstanding service in the face of the enemy, or for zeal, patience and cheerfulness in dangerous waters, and for setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, upholding the high tradition of the Royal Navy.’

John Edwin Caygill was a native of Redcar, Yorkshire. He served during the Second War as a Petty Officer Telegraphist with H.M.S. Melbreak. The latter was a destroyer which served in the Mediterranean, and was part of the escort force for the assault and landings in Normandy, as part of the D-Day operations.
