John McLean Sproul was born in Glasgow on 27 April 1893 and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Corps at Valcartier on 23 September 1914. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with the 2nd Field Ambulance, Canadian Army Medical Corps.
