Harry James Standing was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire and served with the Royal Naval Reserve as a Temporary Skipper from April 1915. From September 1915 he was Skipper of the Hired Trawler H.M. Trawler Shelomi (Admiralty No. 804), which was engaged as a minesweeper and hydrophone vessel.

Thomas Allen was born in Portsmouth. He enlisted into the Royal Navy and by 1916 was serving aboard the Battlecruiser H.M.S. Queen Mary. During the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, the Queen Mary engaged the SMS Derfflinger, putting one of her turrets out of action; she then scored four hits on SMS Seydlitz. The German battlecruiser hit back striking ´Q´, ´A´ and ´B´ turrets. Queen Mary’s forward magazine exploded, the ship listed to port and began to sink amid further explosions. 1,266 of the crew went down with her, leaving only 18 men surviving. Allen is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Herbert Champion was born in Ashford, Kent. He enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1912, originally serving on the shore establishment, H.M.S. Ganges II. His wartime service involved action during the Dardanelles and Gallipoli campaign aboard the battleship H.M.S. Vengeance. From September 1917 until the end of the war he was on the crew of the destroyer H.M.S. Foxhound. Following the War he remained with the Royal Navy until he was discharged in 1928.

Charles Paul was born at Honicknowle, near Plymouth, in 1869. He enlisted into the Royal Navy in 1888 and served aboard many ships, including H.M.S. Indus, Victor Emanuel, Cossack, Niobe and Sapphire. He was pensioned off to the Royal Naval Reserve in March 1910, but was recalled at the start of the Great War for service on the cruiser H.M.S. Argonaut, which served as part of the 9th Cruiser Squadron operating in the Atlantic. He was part of the ship’s company when Argonaut captured the German merchant ship Graecia. He later served on H.M.S. King Alfred, then at the Cape of Good Hope Station with H.M.S. Hyacinth and with Simon’s Town base depot ship, Afrikander. Following the end of hostilities, he was discharged from the Royal Navy in May 1919.

James Charles Stone was born in Rotherhithe, London. He served in the Royal Navy and was present in H.M.S. Malaya during the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916. On 12 January 1918, whilst aboard the destroyer H.M.S. Narborough, he died when the ship ran ashore on the cliffs at Hesta Rock, Orkney Islands. Only one sailor survived; 188 were killed. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Charles Henry Stephenson was born in Grimsby. He enlisted into the Royal Naval Reserve during the Great War and served aboard the Trawler Afron. On 30 April 1917 she struck a mine laid by U-Boat UC-61 with the loss of all hands. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
