Samuel Hutchings was born in London and was a resident of Lewisham. He was serving in H.M. Hospital Ship Glenart Castle on 26 February 1918 when it was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-56 whilst in the Bristol Channel en-route to Brest, France. 162 people died during its sinking including the captain, 62 nurses, members of the Royal Army Medical Corps, medical orderlies, and over 90 wounded and sick patients. Samuel Hutchings was among those drowned and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.

Frank Hope Furminger was born in Folkstone, Kent in 1882, and served during the Great War with the Mercantile Marine.

Leonard George Rich was born in West Ham, London, and served during the Great War with the Mercantile Marine.

Thomas Octavtus Shennan was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, and served during the Great War with the Mercantile Marine.

Henry Arthur Lewis Woolgar was born in Lymington, Hampshire, and served during the Great War with the Mercantile Marine.

Ambrose Langley Hunt was born in Dungarvan, Ireland. He had originally served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve before being discharged in 1908. He later served during the Great War in the Mercantile Marine as the Master of the steamship Burrsfield. Whilst towing the X-lighter X-130 to Mudros on 5 October 1915, before proceeding to Gallipoli, his ship was attacked by shellfire from the German submarine, U-33. He was one of four crewmen to be killed in action before the ship was surrendered to the submarine, and he is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.

William Lapthorne was born in Salcombe, Devon in 1868, and served during the Great War in the Mercantile Marine.
