George David Blackman was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire, on 5 January 1882 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 6 July 1897. He joined H.M.S. Orlando on 6 February 1899, and served in her during the Third China War. Advanced Petty Officer First Class on 30 November 1905, he transferred to H.M.S. Exmouth on 11 December 1908, and served in her during the rescue operations following the Messina Earthquake. On 14 December 1914, he joined the Armed Merchant Cruiser H.M.S. Patia, serving aboard this ship until 15 March 1915, when he was transferred to H.M.S. Victory. Blackman was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in February 1915, and died of enteric fever on 31 March 1915. He is buried in Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, Hampshire.
