George Samways was born in West Lulworth, Dorset on 7 January 1874. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 3 May 1890, serving aboard H.M.S. Boscawen. Between then and 1899, he served on numerous ships, having been rated Able Seaman in 1893, and between February 1899 and August 1900, he served in H.M.S. Orlando, serving ashore with the Naval Brigade of that ship during the China War. He joined H.M.S. King Edward VII on 27 March 1909, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 23 October of that year.
