Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (2324. Pte. J. Starkey, 4th. Dn. Gds.); Khedive’s Star 1882, reverse contemporarily engraved ‘Private J. Starkey R. I. D. G. 2324’, heavy pitting and contact marks to medal and tip of one point of Star, the first fine, the Star very fine (2) £140-£180

James Starkey was born in Chiswick, London, in 1858 and attested for the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards at Bow Street Police Court on 25 September 1879. He was convicted of fraudulent enlistment on 4 January 1882, and was sentenced to 9 days’ imprisonment, with his former service being cancelled. Released, he re-joined his unit and served with the Regiment in Egypt from 9 August to 22 October 1882, with the rest of his service at home, and was discharged on 13 March 1889, after 7 years and 61 days’ service.
