Three: Warrant Officer Class II C. W. Hone, Northumberland Fusiliers, who was wounded and taken Prisoner of War on 24 August 1914

Charles Horn attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers as a Boy Soldier on 11 March 1896, and was appointed a Drummer on 16 December of that year. He was promoted Corporal on 1 November 1900; Sergeant on 25 June 1902; Sergeant Drummer on 14 September 1903; and Company Sergeant Major on 29 January 1914. He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 August 1914. He was shot in the neck on 24 August 1914, on the retirement from Mons, and was captured and held as a prisoner-of-war, being later interned in Holland. Repatriated following the cessation of hostilities, he was discharged on 8 May 1920. As well as serving in the Great War (additionally entitled to a British War Medal and Victory Medal), he was also entitled to five medals from his previous service in Egypt, South Africa, and India, earning him a the Queen’s and Khedive’s Sudan Medals; the Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals; and the Delhi Durbar 1911 Medal.
