Henry James Smith was born in Isleworth, Middlesex, in 1878 and attested for the Border Regiment, serving with them in South Africa during the Boer War. Discharged, he re-enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment, and served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 June 1915. He was killed in action on 10 October 1915. He is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France.

Sold with Border Regiment and East Surrey Regiment cap badges; and a Commemorative Scroll named to ‘Mrs. Smith’, thanking her for her assistance in taking in evacuees during the Second World War.
