Daniel Giles was born in Bushey Field, Chislett, Kent, on 14 January 1877, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 31 March 1892. He was advanced Able Seaman on 4 April 1895, and joined H.M.S. Theseus on 14 January 1896, being promoted Leading Seaman in the same ship on 20 December of that year, and Petty Officer Second Class on 10 April 1897. He was advanced Chief Petty Officer on 20 October 1908, and joined H.M.S. Pembroke on 1 September 1909. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 24 January 1910, before transferring to H.M.S. Alert on 4 February 1910. He served following the outbreak of the Great War in H.M.S. Phoenix, and died when borne in that ship on 7 January 1915, when he was washed overboard in a violent storm. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
