Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Capt. Pierce Chute, 84th Regt.) toned, extremely fine £400-£500

Pierce Chute was appointed Ensign in the 84th Regiment on 17 May 1850; Lieutenant, 7 September 1852; Captain, 2 July 1858.

Captain Chute served during the Indian Mutiny ‘With Commander in Chief’s Force, Lucknow. Died 21st August 1858.’

‘Was present at the occupation of the camp at Allumbagh, siege and capture of Lucknow, and the Shahabad District from June 9th to August 21st, 1858. Slighlty wounded at the Allumbagh 25th February 1858. Medal and clasp.’ (
84th Roll of Officers refers)

Chute is mentioned in several entries in the
Indian Mutiny Diary of Lieutenant H. P. Pearson, 84th Regiment:

Camp nr. Alum-baugh Lucknow, New Year’s Day 1858
- ‘Chute told me he saw poor Woolhouse at Allahabad looking very ill, but he left this place little more than a skeleton.’

Camp nr. Alum-baugh Lucknow, 22nd February, 1858 - ‘On 20th went shooting with Chute and killed a fine mallard at seventy yards distance. Chute got one snipe and some red shanks.’

26th Chute was hit in the thigh by a spent ball, but he has not returned himself as wounded as it was too slight. Whilst we were standing there 2 or 3 round shots came “uncommon” close, and one pitched a few feet in rear of our company.’

Karuntadhee, Buxar, 20th August, 1858 - ‘Chute is very ill, so is Pratt, and you would not find two officers in the regiment that are really well.’

‘23rd Poor Chute of ours is dead. He died at Doomraon on the 20th inst. of erysipelas in the head: he had been sick for several days before he died, and it was thought nothing of till the 19th when he became dangerously ill. His gazette to Captain probably never reached him, as communications with Doomraon is not regularly kept up.’

‘I am now, by poor Chute’s death, made 8th Lieutenant.’

Doomraon, Buxar, 12th September, 1858 - ‘The men have erected a very nice tomb over poor Chute’s remains and are preparing an inscription for it.’
