Haydn Gardner Metcalfe was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1896. He was employed by S. L. Behrens and Co. of Manchester prior to serving with the 1/6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment during the Great War in Gallipoli from 23 July 1915. He was killed in action whilst serving with ‘A’ Company on 7 August 1915 at the Battle of the Krithia Vineyard (6 – 13 August 1915). This offensive was intended as a larger diversionary action to cover the landings at Suvla Bay and Anzac Cove but the assault failed, only capturing ‘The Vineyard’. British casualties for the battle were over 4,000, and Lieutenant William Forshaw, Manchester Regiment, was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry between 7 and 9 August 1915 at the Krithia Vineyard. Metcalfe is buried at the Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Turkey.

Alec Charles Taylor was born in Deddington, Oxfordshire, and attested for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and was killed in action on 26 November 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
