Issa Salem served during the Great War as a Fireman in the Egyptian Coastguard vessel Nuhr-el-Bahr, and is confirmed as receiving a 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal on the Royal Naval Medal rolls under the list of Egyptian Government Service recipients, with his medals being issued by the Director General of the Coastguard, Alexandria.’
The Nuhr-el-Bahr was a 450 ton vessel built in 1884, which was damaged by gunfire from the enemy submarine U-35 at the Port of Sollom on 5 November 1915.
