Thomas Griffiths was born in St. Decumans, Somerset, on 7 September 1878, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 20 June 1891. He was promoted Able Seaman, whilst serving in H.M.S. Royal Sovereign on 20 April 1898, Leading Seaman, whilst serving in H.M.S. Bulwark on 1 January 1903, and Petty Officer Second Class, whilst in the same ship, on 1 April 1904. Rated Petty Officer First Class on 1 November 1906, he was posted to H.M.S. Halcyon on 16 August 1914, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 21 October 1915. He served in a variety of shore based establishments for the remainder of the Great War, and was shore pensioned on 9 October 1919, having been latterly advanced to Chief Petty Officer.
