Four: Lieutenant C. White, Royal Navy

Charles White was born in Portsmouth on 31 May 1841 and joined the Royal Navy on 1 January 1854. His service is unknown until his certificate of service (ADM 139/690) notes him as a Carpenters Mate aboard H.M.S. Stromboli from 11 November 1861 (and as such his entitlement to the Baltic Medal is unconfirmed). Promoted Carpenter Third Class on 4 July 1866, and Carpenter Second Class on 1 April 1870, he joined H.M.S. Asia on 1 January 1873. He next joined H.M.S. Victor Emanuel on 21 November 1873, serving with this ship during the Ashantee War, before removing back to H.M.S. Asia on 12 June 1874. Serving next with H.M.S. Undaunted, he was promoted Carpenter in 1875 and served aboard H.M. Ships Daphne, Indus, Asia, and Sultan, before joining H.M.S. Devastation on 22 August 1885. He was promoted Chief Carpenter on 30 September 1889. His final appointments were to H.M.S. Victory, Royal Clarence shipyard, and General Depot, before being finally discharged with the rank of Lieutenant on 13 December 1896.
