Harry Wellings was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, on 25 January 1894, and having emigrated to Canada attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg on 29 December 1915. He served with the Canadian Engineers during the Great War on the Western Front, and was awarded his Military Medal whilst attached to the 1st P & T Unit, Canadian Engineers.
