Joseph Symmonds was born in Stockton, co. Durham, and attested for the Royal Field Artillery at Durham on 9 September 1914, having previously served for five years in the Royal Navy. Promoted Bombardier on 17 October 1914, and Corporal on 29 October of that year, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 27 July 1915, and was awarded his Military Medal whilst attached to the 34th Division Motor Transport Company, Ammunition Section.

Sold with copied research, including the recipient’s Medal Index Card, which shows no entry for the 1914-15 Star.
