A late 18th century verge pocket watch, the white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numeral chapter rings, with rose-cut diamond set scrolled hands, the verge escape movement signed ‘Romilly, Paris’ and numbered ‘348’, the gold case embossed with three colour detail of figures and a dog, within a pierced scroll and foliate surround, with a pinched collet set rose-cut diamond set bezel and rose-cut diamond set stem and push button, diameter 43mm. £300-500

Jean Romilly (1714-1794) was a native of Geneva, but worked out of the Place Dauphine in Paris. He made a watch that could go for a year at winding, and he wrote the technical part of the article on Horlogerie in the Encylopedie Methodique.
