France, Centenary of the Death of Renée Laënnec, 1926, a bronze medal by G. Hayem, bust three-quarters right, rev. legend in wreath, 50mm. Very fine; in blue fitted case (£20-30)

René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laënnec (1781-1826), Breton-born physician who invented the stethoscope, from “his desire to save a young woman’s modesty from the shock of having him listen directly to her chest.” He died from TB at the early age of 45. Further biographical detail is sold with the lot
