A scarce ‘Samana 1897’ Indian Order of Merit pair awarded to Lance Naick Sobha Singh, 36 Sikhs

Indian Order of Merit, 3rd Class Order of Merit ‘Reward of Valour’, silver and enamel; India General Service 1895-1902, 4 clasps, Punjab Frontier 1897-98, Samana 1897, Tirah 1897-98, Waziristan 1901-2 (1288 Lance Naick Sobha Singh, 36 Sikhs) impressed naming, nearly very fine (2) £700-900

I.O.M. Indian Army Order No. 133 of 1898. ‘For conspicuous gallantry at fort Cavagnari, on the Samana Hills, on the 3rd September 1897, on which occasion on the enemy setting fire to a thorn obstacle surrounding the horn-work of the fort, they went out unarmed under a heavy fire and extinguished the flames.’

Sepoy Sobha Singh was wounded by a bullet in the middle of his right shin on the above occasion. He was subsequently promoted to Lance Naick.
