Charles Hemas was born in Gateshead, Durham, and attested for the West Riding regiment at Bradford on 10 March 1891, aged 19 years and two months. He served abroad for 9 years and 322 days, including the war in South Africa, and was discharged at Halifax on 9 March 1903.
