India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Chin-Lushai 1889-90 (3289 Sergt. W. Oliver 1st. Bn. K.O. Sco. Bord.) nearly extremely fine £140-£180

William Oliver was born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1858, and attested for the 25th Foot at Aldershot on 22 October 1877, having previously served in the Hampshire Militia. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served with them in India and Afghanistan from 16 January 1879 to 14 May 1880, and saw action during the Second Afghan War (entitled to a no clasp Medal). After a period at home, during which he was promoted Corporal on 28 June 1881, he saw further service in India from 15 December 1883 to 2 November 1889, and in Burma from 3 November 1889 to 6 February 1891, was promoted Sergeant on 7 November 1888, and took part in the Chin-Lushai Expedition from 15 November 1889 to 30 April 1890. He was discharged on 20 June 1892, after 14 years and 243 days’ service.
