George William Clarke, a native of Canterbury, Kent, attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment, and served with the 11th (Lewisham) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was wounded by gun shot to the right leg, and was admitted to hospital on 20 September 1917. After convalescing in England, he returned to the Western Front with the 6th Battalion, and was awarded the Military Medal.
