Alexander Gollan was born in Banff on 5 December 1873, grew up at Turiff in Aberdeen and was by trade a Blacksmith. He joined the Gordon Highlanders in May 1894, went over to the East Indies on 28 February 1896 and stayed there until 23 September 1899, when he went to South Africa. He left there in January 1902 and went to the East Indies until December 1905, then returned home and left the services in June 1906.
